1984Space Shuttle Discovery's Maiden Voyage: STS-41-D (1984)
On August 30, 1984, the Space Shuttle Discovery (OV-103) blasted off from Launch Complex 39A at 8:41 a.m. EDT, marking its historic first flight. This fourth attempt for Mission STS-41-D aimed to deploy three communications satellites and an experimental solar panel array. Commander Henry W. Hartsfield, Jr., led the crew, which included Pilot Michael L. Coats and four specialists, all making their space debuts except Hartsfield.
The mission featured the filming of IMAX footage for “The Dream Is Alive.” Discovery landed at Edwards Air Force Base on September 5, completing its six-day journey. As the fleet leader, Discovery eventually completed 39 orbital flights. Tragically, crew member Judith A. Resnick later perished in the Challenger disaster on January 28, 1986, underscoring the risks of early shuttle operations.
