1922Vickers Victoria Mk.I Prototype First Flight
On 22 August 1922, Captain Stanley Cockerell, A.F.C., piloted the Vickers Type 56 Victoria Mk.I prototype, J6869, on its maiden flight at Brooklands, Surrey. The twin-engine biplane military transport evolved from the Vernon and Virginia, carrying up to 22 troops with a two-man crew in an open cockpit. Powered by two 450-horsepower Napier Lion I engines, the Victoria reached 110 mph and a 16,200-foot ceiling, with a 770-mile range.
Cockerell, a former World War I fighter ace with seven victories, had earned the Air Force Cross for the 1920 England-to-South Africa 'Times Flight.' By 1922, he was a Vickers test pilot and competed in the King's Cup race. The Victoria saw extensive service with the Royal Air Force until 1935, particularly in Iraq and Afghanistan. Tragically, Cockerell and his young daughter perished during the 1940 Blitz.
