This Day in Aviation

1912

This Day in Aviation: 10 August 1912

On 10 August 1912, Frank McLean piloted his modified Short S.33 float plane up the River Thames, creating a record by passing between the upper and lower parts of Tower Bridge and under London Bridge without touching the water. Starting at 6 a.m. from Harty Ferry, he navigated factory smoke at Gravesend and reached Westminster by 8:30 a.m., where a Port of London Launch took him ashore.

McLean's Short S.33 was a two-place, single-engine four-bay biplane with a pusher configuration and forward elevator. Powered by a 70-horsepower Gnome Gamma rotary engine, the aircraft featured a 70-foot, 6-inch upper wingspan and weighed 1,600 pounds. McLean, a civil engineer and astronomer, later became a Royal Air Force officer and is considered the founder of the Fleet Air Arm.
