198611 August 1986: The World’s Fastest Helicopter
On 11 August 1986, a modified Westland Lynx AH.1, G-LYNX, piloted by John Trevor Egginton with Flight Test Engineer Derek J. Clews, set an FAI Absolute Speed Record for helicopters. Flying over a 15-kilometer course near Glastonbury, Somerset, the aircraft averaged 400.87 kilometers per hour (249.09 mph). This achievement established records for helicopters, the 3,000–4,500 kilogram weight class, and an Absolute World Record for Rotorcraft, all of which still stand thirty-two years later.
The record-breaking Lynx featured experimental BERP main rotor blades and two Rolls Royce Gem 60 engines producing 1,345 shaft horsepower each, augmented by water-methanol injection and thrust-enhancing exhausts. Aerodynamic refinements included WG.30 tail surfaces and the removal of drag-inducing items like steps and antennas. During the speed runs, rotor blade tips reached 0.97 Mach. The helicopter was later restored by AgustaWestland and unveiled on the record's 25th anniversary in 2011.
