1939This Day in Aviation: 27 August 1939
On 27 August 1939, Luftwaffe test pilot Erich Karl Warsitz made history by flying the Heinkel He 178 V1, the world's first jet-propelled aircraft. Assigned to the Reichsluftfahrtministerium, Warsitz completed two short circuits of the airfield before landing. This proof-of-concept prototype, built by Heinkel Flugzeugwerke, featured a high-wing monoplane design with retractable landing gear and a standard nose-intake, tail-exhaust layout that would define future single-engine jets.
Powered by Hans Joachim Pabst von Ohain's HeS 3B turbojet, the wooden and aluminum aircraft reached 632 kilometers per hour during testing. The engine produced 1,102 pounds of thrust using diesel fuel. Though the He 178 V1 was later displayed at Berlin's Deutsches Technikmuseum, it was destroyed in a 1943 bombing raid. A famous photograph captures Warsitz and Ohain leaning away from Herr Heinkel, reportedly to avoid intruding on the picture being taken.
