This Day in Aviation: 23 August 1954

On 23 August 1954, the first Lockheed YC-130 Hercules prototype, serial 53-3397, took to the skies for its maiden flight. Departing from the Lockheed Air Terminal in Burbank, California, the four-engine transport touched down at Edwards Air Force Base after a 1-hour, 1-minute journey. Test pilots Stanley Beltz and Roy Wimmer commanded the aircraft, assisted by flight engineers Jack G. Real and Dick Stanton. Remarkably, the YC-130 achieved liftoff from a standing start in just 855 feet, showcasing its exceptional short-field performance capabilities right from the beginning.

Designed as a basic tactical transport, the C-130 Hercules was built to carry 72 soldiers or 64 paratroopers. All production models were manufactured at Lockheed Martin’s Marietta, Georgia, plant. The aircraft featured a rear loading ramp for vehicles and a large cargo door on the left fuselage, providing a cargo volume of 3,708 cubic feet. Over 40 variants have been produced, serving in roles ranging from aerial tanker to tactical gunship. After 71 years, the C-130 remains in production, outlasting any other aircraft type.
