1938Alexander Prokofiev-Seversky sets transcontinental speed record
On August 29, 1938, Major Alexander Nikolaevich Prokofiev-Seversky departed Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn at 7:37 a.m. aboard his own all-metal monocoque monoplane, the Seversky AP-7 Pursuit NX1384. Flying westward toward the Lockheed Air Terminal in Burbank, California, the Russian-born aviator covered the 2,457-mile distance in just over ten hours. He completed the journey in 10 hours, 2 minutes, and 55.7 seconds, establishing a new speed record for an East-to-West Transcontinental Flight.
Seversky refueled during a single 30-minute stop in Kansas City, where mechanics addressed his gasoline system. Larry Therkelson of the National Aeronautic Association served as the official timer. The Major, who had previously flown fighters for the Czar of Russia, was ferrying the aircraft to Jacqueline Cochran. She intended to retrace his route the following day to compete for the $30,000 Bendix Trophy purse.
