1919

First Flight Across the Canadian Rockies

On 7 August 1919, Captain Ernest Charles Hoy, DFC, became the first pilot to fly across the Canadian Rockies. The World War I fighter ace flew from Richmond, British Columbia, to Calgary, Alberta, carrying mail for the Post Office Department. He piloted a Canadian Aeroplanes Ltd.-built JN-4 “Canuck” biplane, an independent derivative of the Curtiss JN-3 “Jenny.” The aircraft featured ailerons on both wings for improved roll response and was powered by a 90-horsepower Curtiss OX-5 V-8 engine.

Hoy took off from Minoru Park at 4:13 a.m., carrying 45 specially marked letters and special editions of the Vancouver Daily World. After several fuel stops and navigating mountain passes, he landed at Bowness Park in Calgary at 8:55 p.m., completing the journey in 16 hours and 42 minutes. The flight was sponsored by the Aerial League of Canada, which purchased the airplane. Two Canadian newspapers had offered a cash prize for the first person to make this historic flight.
