1930

Neil Armstrong Born in Ohio

On August 5, 1930, Neil A. Armstrong was born in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He would later become the first man to walk on the moon. Armstrong began his NASA career in Ohio, joining the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) in 1955 after serving as a naval aviator. His first assignment was with the NACA Lewis Research Center in Cleveland, where he worked as an engineer and test pilot for 17 years.

Armstrong transferred to astronaut status in 1962 and served as command pilot for Gemini 8, performing the first successful docking of two vehicles in space. As spacecraft commander for Apollo 11, he became the first person to land a craft on the moon and step on its surface. He later held leadership roles at NASA and taught aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati before passing away in 2012.
